Luke Van Why – Maryland Black Bears (NAHL)

The Maryland Black Bears of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that Top Prospects defenseman and NAPHL grad Luke Van Why has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Robert Morris University in Atlantic Hockey.
Van Why, 19, is current in his second season of playing junior hockey in the NAHL. The 5’10/165 lbs. native of Hatfield, PA, currently ranks tied for 5th among all NAHL defensemen in scoring so far this season with 19 points (4 goals, 15 assists) in 26 games played.
“I am excited to announce my commitment to play Division 1 hockey and continue my education at Robert Morris University! I’d like to thank all of my family, friends, teammates, and coaches who have helped me throughout my journey,” said Van Why.
Last season, Van Why had a very good rookie campaign which saw him put up 30 points in 54 games played. He was named the NAHL’s Defenseman of the Month for September of 2021 and was also selected to and played in the 2022 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the Selects team, where he had a goal in two games.
“Congrats to Luke and his family on attaining this commitment. He has accomplished so much in his time here, and we couldn’t be happier for the kid. He is an absolute warrior and one hell of a player. Robert Morris University is getting a great piece of the puzzle,” said Black Bears head coach Clint Mylymok.
Prior to playing in the NAHL, Van Why spent parts of two seasons playing in the NAPHL for the Valley Forge Minutemen from 2017-19.
