CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – First-year Nick Young of the Union College men’s hockey team was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Young, a staple on Union’s blue line through the first four games of the season, scored his first collegiate goal in Friday’s game against nationally-ranked University of Connecticut. The first-year intercepted a pass going up the wall in the offensive end of the ice and sent a one-timer from the blue line that beat UConn goaltender Logan Terness.
Young accounted for five of Union’s 16 blocked shots to lead all skaters. The blueliner currently leads Union with seven blocked shots on the season.
The last Union student-athlete to earn ECAC Rookie of the Week accolades was Tyler Watkins on February 7.
Young and the rest of the Dutchmen are back in action on Thursday with a home contest against Bentley University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
